Temporary internship for foreign doctors

On Wednesday, May 13, members of the National Council of the Slovak Republic voted to adopt a number of amendments to the laws of Slovakia. All amendments will come into force after being signed by the president and published in the Collection of Laws.

One of these amendments is a temporary internship (dočasná stáž) for foreign doctors who have undergone nostrification of a diploma but have not yet passed the qualification exam for doctors (doplňujúca skúška). The possibility of internship is introduced in the law only temporarily – while in Slovakia there is a crisis situation in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The possibility of including this internship in Law No. 576/2004 “On healthcare, services related to the provision of medical care”, as a permanent part of the process of recognition of education for foreign doctors, has been discussed and planned for a long time. About a year ago, the introduction of a temporary internship was already voted on by the National Council of the SR, however, it was not approved.

If you are already working in the Slovak health care system at a lower position, then you can use this opportunity to improve working conditions. If you have nostrified a diploma and are expecting a qualification exam, which was moved to October, then this internship may be useful as additional preparation for passing the exam in the form of language practice and familiarization with the healthcare system in Slovakia.

Unfortunately, this amendment cannot be used for nurses and dentists, as well as for those who have not yet gone through the nostrification procedure.

If you want to know more information regarding applying for an internship, then contact us: malns.correspondence@gmail.com.

New date for the medical exam for doctors

Recently, the dates of the medical exam for foreign doctors (doplňujúca skúška) have been updated on the website of the Jessenian School of Medicine in Martin (Comenius University). It says that the exam will be held October 15-16, 2020:

https://www.jfmed.uniba.sk/studium/uznavanie-dokladov-zo-studia-v-zahranici-a-doplnujuca-skuska/pre-ziadatelov-o-doplnujuce-skusky/

Earlier, we requested information from the Jessen Faculty of Medicine in Martin about whether it would be possible for those who did not apply for participation in the exam in the spring of 2020 to additionally submit applications for the exam and by what date. The other day we received a response that applications will be accepted additionally until September 14, 2020.

About how to apply for participation in the exam, we wrote earlier: https://www.malns.sk/prihlasku-na-doplnujucu-skusku-je-potrebne-poslat-do-18-februara-2020/. We hope that the faculty has the necessary resources to accept the increased number of foreign doctors in order to pass the exam in connection with the postponement of its date. At present, 39 general practitioners and 21 dentists have already been registered for the exam.

Slovak language for doctors – the second group is open!

We were pleasantly surprised by the interest in both our “Unite to Help Slovakia” initiative and the online Slovak language course for doctors, which we, in cooperation with the iCan language school, offered for free for volunteers of the initiative.

We received many applications, and the number of people wishing and suitable in terms of knowledge of the Slovak language exceeded the number of places in the group, so we decided to make two groups. The first group is staffed and begins classes on Monday, April 27. The second group will begin classes in two weeks, May 11th. There are 5 more free places!

More about the course in this post.

Slovak language for doctors – we start on the 27th of April 2020

The maximum number of participants in the group is 10. At the moment, there are two more free places left, so if you still want to participate, please contact us. We wrote more about the course last week.

IMPORTANT: the required level of knowledge of the Slovak language for participation is B1!

Postponement of the date of the qualification exam to the autumn of 2020

We have already written that the date of the qualification exam for foreign doctors on March 19-20, 2020 was canceled and to this day, no additional information has been received from the Jessenius Medical Faculty of Comenius University in Martin.

Today, April 17, 2020, all foreign doctors who were registered for the qualification exam in spring this year received a newsletter about the postponement of the exam date. Representatives of the faculty inform that the exam is postponed to the autumn semester, provisionally to October. By decree of the Ministry of Education, the medical faculty in Martin will remain responsible for the examination this autumn; all applications submitted will remain valid.

The letter also says that an official response will be requested from the Ministry of Education, will there be conditions that everyone who successfully passed the written part of the exam in the autumn of 2019 will be able to skip this step and take only the oral part in the autumn of 2020. Confirmation of this information will be announced later.

We want to mention, that this week the Minister of Health Marek Krajčí in an interview with the Slovak Republic News Agency (TASR) has said that the Ministry would do its best to accelerate the processes that will allow doctors from other countries to enter the Slovak health care system. Such contradictory announcements show, unfortunately, the inconsistency of the actions of different ministries.

We, in turn, on behalf of the International Association of doctors in Slovakia will request an official response from the Ministry of Education of Slovakia about how many foreign doctors are registered for the exam and whether additional applications will be accepted and if so, by what date.

Preparation course for Medical exam on the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin

From 27th of January until 31st of January 2020 a preparation course for Medical exam for foreign doctors was organized by the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin.

The program of the course consisted of 4 lectures on the main subjects: internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and surgery. Each day of the course questions and problems of each subject were discussed and analyzed. The last, 5th day, was organized a lecture on the legislative. Teachers explained the laws which were mentioned in preparation questions for the Medical exam. This was considered by the participants as a very helpful innovation of the course.

Dentists had lectures not just about their specialization, but also regarding the basics of therapy, surgery and legislative.

Teachers at the course pointed out specifics on which the participants should focus on the written exam and also on the oral exam. They were also very helpful and willing to answer all the questions.

Doctors, who took part in the preparation course comment on the content and quality of the lectures, and also on the friendly behavior of the teachers very positively.
